Most of the valley catchment was cleared and farmed until about the 1930s. The regenerating bush contains many nice specimens of tanekaha, totara, rimu, kahikitea and kauri and kotukutuku. Resident birds include tui, kereru, riroriro (gray warbler), piwakawaka and kaka, while korimako and kakariki are frequent visitors and pipiwharauroa (shining cuckoo) are common in the spring and summer.
The stream holds koura (freshwater crayfish), and several native fish species including banded kokopu, tuna (eels), giant bully and schools of inanga.
Parts of the bush are currently protected by QEII and Rodney District Council covenants.
