Fiona Francis continues to wage war on what she has aptly referred to as the ‘trifecta of weeds’ – tobacco plant, ginger and climbing asparagus. After several attempts, she finally nailed the tobacco tree she had been repeatedly spotting from her kitchen window.
There are copious quantities of this trifecta of weeds in the surrounding area, making the job particularly challenging. It has been said that climbing asparagus only invades the borders of the bush. This could not be further from the truth. Sadly, this weed is seriously encroaching on precious bush areas in numerous locations.
On Saturday, 5 September, we joined forces and attacked a grove of tobacco trees, masses of climbing asparagus, along with ginger and a huge crop of banana passionfruit. Judging by the size of the woody stem, the banana passionfruit was ancient and has probably been the source of seedlings throughout the whole of Leigh for many years. It was particularly satisfying to nail this well-established weed.
Fiona has also become a dab hand at trapping, and has been assisting the LHVS on trapping rounds. This support has been really appreciated, particularly during a period when two of our main volunteers have been unavailable.
Thanks Fiona. You are a star and it’s great to have you on our team!
